 Friday, April 20th Expo
I met my good friend Lynne from Beginners Run Marathons Too for breakfast. We walked from her hotel near Plaza de Espana to Lago where the expo was being held. There I met my blogger friend Yolanda from La Pinguina Veloz and later on my mom. This was a nice indoor carpeted expo. Because we arrived relatively early on Friday, people were still at work, we didn't have to wait in line to pick our running packages. How nice! As part of our goodie bags, we received a nice red & black backpack, a sports armband holder for our mp3 player and a technical shirt. Not bad at all! I ended up exchanging my shirt for a men's one.  The women's cut didn't fit me very well . We took a bunch of pictures together and left the expo after a quick look around.

Saturday, April 21st Pasta Party

Next day, Lynne and I met at the expo again for the pasta party which was next door. Thank goodness we didn't pick our running packages that day. It was very crowded. I met Yolanda in the pasta party line. I was surprised that this was free. In the states, they charge at least $35 per person.

Race Day
Sunday, April 22nd

I woke up at 3:00am, 4:00am, 5:00am, 6:00am and finally 7:00am. At 7:15, I received a good luck phone call from my awesome husband. How sweet! I left home at 7:30am and met Lynne at 7:40am at the Gregorio Maranon metro.

We went to Alonso Martinez and walked to Cibeles to meet my Spanish blogger friends. OMG! There were so many people at the Ayuntamiento. How am I going to find them? Very easy! They were the funniest and the loudest.

After taking a couple of pictures, we went back to our corral #5, around 8:30. There we meet, Greg and Wendy who also ran RnR Edinburgh the previous weekend.

The gun went off at 9:00am, our corral left 10-15 minutes later. The first 5 km were uphill but I didn't notice it all, perhaps because of the excitement. There were a couple of rolling hills but nothing too scary 'til you get to Raimundo Fernandez Villaverde. "Oh wait! We are running over the bridge. That's not bad at all!". For some reason, I thought we were going to run it at the street level which seems more steep.

¡Bieeeen!

From here we went to Glorieta de Cuatro Caminos and down to Guzman el Bueno. I lived on this street while attending university and I was happy to run by my old building. I laughed when I heard the Chariots of Fire soundtrack from a loud speaker. I wonder if this is always there. Then came Alberto Aguilera and Bilbao where I used to go out to party 100 years ago :-) From Bilbao to Fuencarral, Gran Via and Preciados where I used to go shopping. I thought of my grandma as we ran pass La Mallorquina in Sol.

Me hace mucha ilusión ver mi antiguo edificio.

Big crowds and lots of "tu si que puedes superwoman" and "eres la mejor, superman" and "vuela supergirl" hahaha. My friend Lynne who had been running by my side until this point suddenly disappears to chat with a policeman. OMG! She is so energetic! She talks to everyone while running ( people in uniform, little kids, old woman ... You name it!).  I don't usually talk when I run. I think I told her. Hopefully, it didn't come across the wrong way. I can't shout as the weakest part of my body is my throat :(  If that goes bad everything goes bad ( laryngitis, headaches and migraines). Forgive me, beautiful! Lynne  catches me up a few minutes later. I looked at my Garmin for the first time since km 3. OMG, we are almost half way!

After we passed the Palacio de Oriente, I get happy. We were heading towards Parque Del Oeste where I used to go running when I studied at the Complutense. I can go fast on the downhills. My body loves it! We ran Avenida Valladolid leaving Casa Mingo to the left. I thought of my husband as we passed by. This is one of his favorite restaurants. How I wish he was running with me at that moment. He would have stopped to ask for some "chorizos a la sidra". I am sure!

My grandparents were waiting for me at the end of the avenue. I stopped, gave them a hug and kisses, grabbed a couple of bananas and continued on. My Garmin just died but at least I have fruit with me. In prior races this would have destroyed me mentally, but not today. I didn't even give it a thought. Besides, I have my iPhone with the Nike+ app. We entered in Casa De Campo where my friend Susana was waiting for me. I gave her a hug, a kiss and grabbed another banana for later. All my GU gels had fallen from my belt. Calamity!  Well, bananas will do it.

¡Calamidad! Menos mal que tengo bananas.

Running in Casa De Campo was my least favorite part. It's beautiful but sandy which really slowed me down. I thought of what Jan told me before the race. There is a crazy hill leaving the park. I must save energy for that! Lynne and I had agreed to meet at km 30 and give each other a hug and celebrate a brand new day with a jellybean and energy drink. An old man was looking at us with a funny look "Pero que haceis? Que lo dificil vine a hora! Seguid". He didn't know this was part of our plan.  Only 12 km left but we are counting down 10,9,8 ... because the last 2, well don't count, right? hahaha.

Jajaja

After Casa De Campo starts the real marathon. Holly cow! It was all uphill. Coincidentally, I met Jan around Puente de Segovia. He tells me that his quads are hurting him but he ran a little bit with me. How nice! My iPhone suddenly died. This means no GPS and no music for the hardest part of the marathon. No problem! I can do it!

Lynne caught up with me at km 35, she had taken a short break to visit the porta-loos. The hills were getting tougher and I was not familiar with the streets but it didn't matter. I was getting a lot of cheers from other runners who were walking and some spectators "quiero volar contigo nena" and a 5 year old boy "ala papa si es superman" hahaha it was a lot of fun.

Lynne put on her music, she is not talking anymore, she is singing. What? Yep, she is singing to Will Smith beats. She cracks me up! She speeds up a little bit. I am just behind. I have agreed to meet my grandparents at the Ronda de Valencia. I saw them all the way from Ronda de Atocha waving 2 flags. I stopped to give hugs and kisses and continue. Alfonso XII was brutal. Everyone was walking but I was running. I was not going to stop for unscheduled walks during this marathon.

¡Me parto!

As soon as I saw Parque Del Retiro I got excited. We were almost done! Not really. Calle de Alcala was the toughest for me cause I didn't expect it. I have read many race recaps and for some reason I had erased this part from my head. When I entered in El Retiro I could see the Arch. All right, it's the finish line! But it wasn't. I ran at full speed to the second arch and the third arch and the fourth arch. OMG! Where the hell is the finish line? I don't think I've ever ran a faster mile in my life. Too bad I don't have my stats. Soon, came the last arch, the official finish line. YESSSS!

Siiiiiiiii!

Few meters from the finish line was my friend Lynne. She had arrived a minutes before me. I had to ask her since I didn't have a watch with me. I had finished in 4:36:46. My new PR, 49 minutes faster than the NYM and I didn't hit the wall. I was happy! Especially a minute later when I saw my mom giving out the medals!!!! So excited that she volunteered for this event! I know she gave Yoli and Juan their medals too.

Casi me pongo a llorar.

I grabbed some water, oranges, nuts, Powerade and got sprayed on my legs with some magical icy liquid that took away all my soreness. How is it possible to run a marathon and not to be sore at all next day? Seriously!  Right after the race, I met my family, Leti and my best friend, Susana, who had come to congratulate me with a beautiful bouquet of red and yellow flowers.

Pre-race

Thursday, April 15th 2012 - Arrival

I arrived at the Edinburgh airport at 11:00pm, after a loooong 20 hour flight. I was tired but excited. It was my first trip to Scotland and my first international race. At the baggage claim, I received a BIG welcome hug from my mom. She had flown to Edinburgh to see me run, but she wasn't going to be able to do so. No, no sad faces here! She was actually going to do something better. She was going to be the one giving out the finisher's medal out on Sunday.  So special! Another first one for me!  We took the Airlink bus to the city center and walked to our hotel in the Grassmarket area. Oh, I was already in love with Edinburgh!

Friday, April 16th 2012 - Sightseeing

We spent the whole day touring the beautiful city. It was cold but sunny. We walked for at least 10 hours, including a fantastic 4-hour free tour offered by the SANDEMANs group.  I totally recommend it. Our guide, Santi, was excellent.

Saturday, April 14th 2012 - Expo

The expo was located at the Holyrood Park, Queens Drive. It was opened from 10:00am - 7:00pm.  It was rather small in terms of vendors. I counted less than 10 booths including: the official RnR store, Sketchers, GU, a company selling compressions socks, and Run 4 It which was selling a couple of Scottish products ( hats and gloves with Scotland's blue and white flag). However, don't be deceived. There was nothing small about this event.  As I mentioned before, this took place in Holyrood Park. The most beautiful open space I've ever seen, next to magical Arthur's Seat.

He reminded me of my little one but with a kilt

To top the prime location, the organizers surprised us with a free 1-hour concert by non other than the famous Scottish group,  the Red Hot Chili Pipers. It's was out of this world.

 Race Day

Sunday, April 15th 2012

I woke up at 7:00am and met my friend Tessa, from San Diego, at the hotel lobby at 7:30. I ate 2 bananas and walked to the starting line with Wendy, another runner from San Diego who was staying at the same hotel. We arrived at the starting area around 8:15 ish and met with other runners from the US.

'Mua'. Tessa. Rick and Wendy

It was cold, verrrrry cold, 1C degree. You could tell who were the locals!
OMG! Half naked in this weather!

The race started at 9:00am. I was in corral 5. The first five miles were flat with some rolling hills. We ran towards Forth of Firth, along the Portobello Promenade and through some residential neighborhood.  Some parts were a little bit narrow but not too bad. We passed 2 golf courses to the left and the Holyrood Park to the right. Breathtaking views!  At around mile 8, I could see the finish line but I knew the BEST was yet to come as we hadn't ran through the castle and the Meadows. Let the hills begin! OMG! It was up up up.

At mile 9, I met Tessa who was cursing at the hills. We passed my hotel in Grassmarket and soon after that the Elephant House, where we went for breakfast the day before. I was in familiar territory. As soon as I saw Princess Street from the distance I started to speed up. I knew it would be all flat and downhill from that point on. The last 2 miles were fast for me. My legs were feeling strong and I was no longer cold.  In the horizon, my mom with the finisher medal. What else could I ask for? :-) My finishing time was 2:07. Not a PR but I was not going for one. After all, this was my last long run before the RnR Madrid Marathon, the following weekend. I was really happy.

The most awesome RnR volunteer EVER! My mom!

Post-race

Since my mom was working / volunteering for another 2 1/2 hours and my friend Tessa and I weren't tired - after running a half marathon- we decided to hike to Arthur's seat. It took us about 2 hours to go up and down. There is a beautiful view of the city from the top!

Race Review

Pros
- Very well organized.
- Beautiful race course
- Best pre-race concert EVER

Cons
- I am usually very critical but I can't think of anything negative. To me, this  race was superb.

Big thanks to all the organizers!

Inaugural Hollywood Half Marathon Race Recap & "Vamos que nos vamos!"

Race Date: Saturday, April 7th
Starting Time: 6:00 am

Race Course

Race Elevation

Friday, April 6th - Expo

We left from San Diego to Hollywood around 1:00 pm and we arrived around 4:30 pm. This trip usually takes 2 hours. However, we were stuck in LA traffic during rush hour. Oh noooo! I was getting nervous looking at my clock and thinking, "I am not going to make it to the expo on-time. I should have paid the extra $15 to have the race packet shipped to my address".

We were staying at the Sheraton Universal which turned out to be very close to the Hilton Universal where the Health and Fitness Expo was being held. My in-laws stayed with our kids at our hotel while my husband and I headed to the Expo.

View from our hotel

The Expo was a little chaotic. It was small but very crowded. After picking up our bibs and technical shirts, we did a quick walk around and went back to our hotel. We picked up our family and headed to Universal Studio City Walk for dinner and some shopping. What a fun place! This was our first trip to Universal with our two kids.

Sweet Marilyn made from 254,093 Jelly Belly beans

After carb-loading at Buca Di Beppo, we walked back to our hotel and jumped into the outdoor pool with our kids. The weather was still excellent at 8:00pm. One hour later everyone was tired and in bed.

Saturday, April 7th - Race Day

We woke up at 4:30 am. I was fresh as a daisy. I can't recall the last time I've slept 7 1/2 hours straight even with people fighting in the room next door at 2:00am. We got ready and headed to the lobby where I was meeting my fellow blogger friend Audrey Hepburn, aka Super Magnolia. We also met her friend who is doing a full ironman in 4 weeks. We walked together to the starting line, about 15 minutes away.

There we met our friends from "Embrace The Crazy"

We took a bunch of pictures and wished each other good luck before heading to our corrals. On the way there, I met "watermelon guy". He was planning on running the half marathon with a big watermelon in his head. I am not sure about the purpose of this exercise but he mentioned he has done it before. I believe at the LA Marathon. He let me try it. hahaha, it was a heavy watermelon. This guy stole the pre-race show and since I was next to him and I spoke Spanish, the tv channel Univision decided to interview us both. So watch Primer Impacto on Monday at 5:00pm for my 20 seconds of fame. :)

The race started at 6:00am. The corral assignments were not very clear to us so we jumped in corral 2 and started after the second wave. The first mile was flat around Citywalk.

At mile 2, we started going downhill. I checked my Garmin and thought "slow down, you are going too fast" but my legs were feeling good so I kept up. The rest of the course until mile 7 was almost flat but no completely as I initially thought it would be. Then, at mile 7.5 we turned around. I was happy and full of energy. I was following a guy that was very muscular dressed up like Marilyn Monroe ( white wig, arm warmers, skirt and hairy legs hahaha). He was my pacer until that point.

At mile 8, I planned to drink some water and take some GU, knowing that soon I would have to conquer the crazy hill. But wait, the volunteers ran out of cups and were handing out water jugs to share amongst the runners. This really grossed me out. Still I did it cause I needed something to help the GU gel go down.

Next time I looked at the clock, I had run 10 miles in a little over 1 h 30 min. Yahoo, a possible sub-2! But not at this race :( Big hill mountain coming up! At mile 11.5, I got "kriptonited". My super girl powers stopped working and my cape was not performing as advertised. Aghghg, those last 2 miles!! I ran it all the way but at a turtle speed thinking about Madrid with its similar tough end course.

The last half mile of the race course was downhill. My finishing time 2:06:08. Exactly the same time as in the San Diego Half Marathon at Petco a couple of weeks ago, but on a much harder course. I am happy. My goal for this race was to have fun. Nothing else. Mission accomplished!

Race Review

Pros
- Beautiful medal

- Nice technical shirt, even the running bib looked good.

-FUN race. Lots of runners dressed up like superheroes and movie stars.

Cons
- Expo was a little chaotic.
- Having to pay $8 to upgrade to a technical shirt. I have never been given a cotton race shirt before, except for the La Jolla Half Marathon.
- Corral assignments were not clear.
- There was no water cups available to runners after mile 8.
- Long walk from the finishing line to Universal Studios

This is an inaugural so there is lots of room for improvement. However, I must say that I am very impressed with the organizer for addressing many of these issues right after the race. I can tell he is very committed to make this race a success. For me, it was a FUN event. It was a little crazy here and there but overall I enjoyed it.

*** Coming Up

On Wednesday, I am heading to Europe for my first international race. I'll be in Scotland for 5 days to run he RnR Edinburgh Half Marathon (Sunday, April 15th).

This is my first trip to beautiful green Scotland, land of bagpipes, kilts, rolling hills, wonderful historic castles and handsome people like Gerard Butler ;) My plan is to have fun and take it all in. No time goals for this race. Afterall, I have a full marathon a week later, the RnR Madrid Marathon (April 22nd).

I don't have words to express how I feel about this European running adventure. I am happy. I am terrified. I am excited like a little child. Leaving you with a video of one of my favorite movies.

Don't ever let somebody tell you you can't do something.
If you want something, go get it. Period.

To my blogger friends in Spain, I hope we meet before the race. Please leave me a note if there is a "quedada blogera"
