The first one was a major 10-hour power outage affecting all San Diego County. It happened from Thursday 3:00pm - Friday 1:30am. This meant, no midweek run for me. On the other hand, we closed our offices and went home early. We picked up our kids, had a nice dinner, prepared some popcorn and watched a movie on our battery-powered laptop. This was peaceful and gave us all a chance to disconnect from the Internet and reconnect with our loved ones. It was beautiful to go back to the basics, to meet our neighbors, to stop the clock. From what I heard, all of my friends had similar experiences (candlelight dinner, ice cream, playing under the moonlight, etc...). Then, I thought of the 2003 blackout in New York City. We also managed to have a good time then. We lived very close to work, a 5-minute commute from Wall Street. We had time to grab dinner and watch movies. However, collectively there was mass hysteria. A 92-year old was trapped in the elevator, all hotels in the city were booked as commuters were trying to find a place to stay for the night, people stuck in the subways, in the tunnels ... think RATS!
The second event was the 10th anniversary of 9/11 on Sunday. I actually didn't realize it was Sept 11th until I ran by the Cardiff Surfer Statue, also known as the "Magic Carpet Ride" or the "Cardiff Kook". He was dressed up in firefighter gear to commemorate the day. In front of the statue there was a yellow poster reading "Never Forget 9/11". This made me think of the days after the attack and how desperate we felt living two blocks from the World Trade Center. I am not going to go into details but I just want to say that it gave me a lot of strength to see this tribute. I was able to finish my longest run EVER, 15 miles (from Del Mar to Encinitas).
This is my weekly summary:
| Mon: | 10-mile walk (Disneyland) |
| Tue: | REST |
| Wed: | REST |

Thank You! The blackout experience was formidable. It was nice to go to the basics. I'd love to join you and your crew for a run. Let me know where you usually meet. I do most of my long runs on Thu nights and Sun mornings.
